Inspired by the principle of modern IT input devices, which allow users to access frequently used shortcuts on a computer, our Dynamic Keypad introduces freely configurable key interfaces to the commercial vehicle sector for the first time. It is capable of replicating a wide variety of control buttons using just eight keys in a compact space. Eight buttons can be assigned various functions, including those that change depending on the situation, while two navigation buttons ensure quick switching from one function level to the next. The Dynamic Keypad communicates with the vehicle’s components via the CAN bus.
Thanks to the buttons’ distinct shapes, the keypad can be used without visual contact—that is, purely by touch. The crosswise ridge facilitates orientation during blind operation, and the buttons’ dimensions allow for use while wearing work gloves. Each button can display any icons, including customer-specific ones—this is made possible by the industrial-grade screen integrated into the housing. The safety layer, positioned between the buttons and the display, is responsible for the switching process—thus meeting requirements for safety, ergonomics, and UX.
The keypad consolidates complex control panels into a single unit that is so compact it can be integrated, for example, into the A-pillar of a tractor or wheel housing. This reduces the amount of wiring required and, consequently, engineering, installation, and manufacturing costs. Not to mention the clearer layout of the cab and the safety-enhancing concentration of all control elements.
Dust- and waterproof, mechanically robust, and designed for continuous operation under demanding conditions, it meets the safety standard DIN EN ISO 13849—and thus also enables safety-related functions such as braking systems.
